Asagao (morning glory) is fairly easy to grow. By understanding the nature, it adds more joy to it.

Germination Treatment

Soak in water overnight. The seeds will soften and get a little bigger. Shave a rounder area of the seed with nail clipper or knife to facilitate germination.

Nature of Morning Glory

Morning glory is suitable to plant where in sunny and airy location. The best location is where it gets the morning sunlight. The place where it gets sunlight all day, it gets damaged easily due to lack of water. It has a nature of blooming as the daylight hours becomes shorter. Try to put it in a place where it gets as dark as possible at night. It is enough to water once a day, but please check in the morning and evening for the summer time and give a plenty of water when the soil is dry.

For direct sowing

Cultivate the soil well and add fertilizer such as compost and leaf mulch. Space out about 15 to 20 centimetres, make a hole about one joint of your finger, and put seeds into the hole. Let’s make a green curtain by putting up your favourite props.

For potted plants

A regular size pot for morning glory plant is about 8-inch pot. When the plant grown 4 to 5 leaves, setup a support and guide the vine in a clockwise direction.

For growing in a planter

Please place pumice stone or gravel at the bottom of the planter for better drainage, and then cover it with soil. Make a hole with your finger with 15 to 20 centimetres intervals, then put the seeds in.

For checking flower colours

By looking at the young plant stem of the morning glory, you can guess the colour of the flower. If the colour of the stem is light, it will be light pink or blue. Darker stems are more likely to be bright pink or dark blue or purple. You can also judge by the colour of first leaf.

For Pinching morning glory

By pinching the morning glory young buds, it increase the number of vines and it creates more volumes, and bigger morning glory. Cut off the buds at the tip of the vine when the vine grows 8-10 leaves.
